I never thought I’d find peace in a place that felt like the end of the world.

When I first arrived in Cullen Bay, the wind carried the scent of salt and memory — a reminder that I wasn’t home, but perhaps, I was meant to be here.

I’m Lara Dela Cruz, a Filipino nurse who left Manila in 2024 to work in a small coastal clinic in northern Scotland. I wanted silence, space, and a way to forget the noise of my past — the failed engagement, the loss of my father, and the feeling that I was running out of time.

Every morning, I walked by the cliffs to the lighthouse. Locals said the keeper rarely spoke, that he lived alone and never left his post — a man who chose solitude over the world.

The first time I saw him, he was fixing the old light mechanism under the mist. Tall, broad-shouldered, with eyes that looked like they’d seen too much. He glanced at me, nodded once, and returned to his work.

“Morning,” I said, breaking the silence.

He looked up, his voice deep but calm.

“Storm’s coming. Best not to stay long.”

And just like that, I realized — some people speak through storms.

That day, the sea was restless… just like my heart.
