The fog rolled in heavy that night, swallowing the cliffs and sea alike.

Inside the lighthouse, the air was thick — not from the mist, but from everything left unsaid.

Elliot sat by the lantern, his hands shaking slightly as he polished the brass. I’d brought him tea, but he didn’t drink it. He stared at the flame, as if searching for something beyond it.

“She wasn’t supposed to die,” he whispered.

I didn’t move. The only sound was the slow hum of the light turning above us.

“I told her to wait until the tide went down. But she… she wanted to prove she could brave the sea like me.”

He laughed bitterly. “I used to think love meant saving someone. Turns out, it was letting them go.”

I looked at him, really looked — and realized how loneliness had aged him. The sea had taken not just his wife, but his years.

Then he said, “You remind me of her. The way you listen. The way you never run, even when the world around you storms.”

My chest tightened. There were no right words to answer that — only silence, filled by the distant waves breaking below.

That night, as I lay awake in the keeper’s quarters, I heard the sea calling again.

It didn’t sound angry anymore… it sounded like it was weeping.
