Nights in Cullen Bay were never completely dark.
Even without the stars, the lighthouse beam swept across the sea — slow, steady, unblinking.
But that night, something changed.
The light flickered. Once. Twice. Then it dimmed, though there was no wind, no power failure.
Elliot froze mid-sentence. His face paled.
“She’s here,” he whispered.
At first, I thought he meant someone had entered. But then I saw it — a faint glow at the edge of the balcony, moving like a lantern swinging in the wind.
No footsteps. No figure. Just that quiet, golden shimmer.
I reached for the door. Elliot stopped me.
“Lara… when the sea calls, don’t answer.”
His voice trembled — part warning, part memory.
The glow drifted toward the rocks below. I could hear faint humming — a woman’s voice, soft, almost like a lullaby.
Then, silence.
The light steadied again. Elliot turned away, whispering something I could barely hear:
“She never stopped coming back.”
For the first time, I believed him.
Maybe the sea doesn’t take — it keeps.
