The storm passed like a fever — violent, then suddenly quiet.

Cullen Bay returned to its usual calm, but the air inside the lighthouse still carried the weight of what Elliot said.


While he repaired the lantern the next morning, I cleaned the storeroom. Beneath a stack of weather-worn journals, I found a small wooden box. Inside was a photograph — faded, water-stained, but still clear enough to see.


Elliot and a woman stood by the shore. Her dress fluttered in the wind. She was laughing, holding his hand.

But what caught my breath wasn’t her smile… it was what lay in the background — the same jagged rocks where the sea had almost taken me the night before.


When I showed him the photo, Elliot grew silent. His eyes lingered on it as if seeing a ghost.

“She loved the sea more than life itself,” he whispered. “That night, I told her to stay. She didn’t.”


He walked toward the balcony, holding the picture. “Every storm since then… I keep the light on, hoping she finds her way back.”


Below, the fishermen were repairing their nets, singing softly in Gaelic. The sun had finally broken through, yet for Elliot — it was still raining inside his heart.
