It was raining the day I discovered the letters.

I had gone to the lighthouse to bring Elliot some medicine for his cough, but when I entered, the wind pushed the old door open wider — revealing the room where he kept his tools, journals, and… dozens of envelopes tied in faded blue ribbon.


Each letter was addressed to “Maeve” — his wife.

The ink had faded, but the pain inside the words hadn’t.


> “The sea was calm today. It almost feels wrong when it isn’t angry, as if it’s mocking me for surviving when you didn’t.”

“I still light the beacon for you, love. Maybe one day, you’ll follow the light home.”




I wanted to stop reading, but something in those words reached me. It was grief that refused to die — love that never found peace.


When he caught me standing there, I froze.

He didn’t get angry. He simply looked at the letters and said softly,

“Sometimes, the only way to talk to the dead… is to keep pretending they can still read.”


That night, the beacon glowed brighter than usual.

And I realized — Elliot wasn’t just guiding ships. He was still trying to guide her home.
