The Stories of Us - Episode 18 – Silent Guardian

The office was colder after that night. She walked with her head low, her usual quiet determination dimmed by the cruelty of those who couldn’t stand her light.

But what they didn’t know… was that I was watching. Always.

When I saw the cruel note taped to her desk, I didn’t just tear it down. I traced the handwriting, searched the whispers, and quietly learned who had started it. I never confronted them directly — not yet. But I spoke to HR, slipped evidence where it needed to be, and soon, the office “gossips” found themselves on thin ice.

She never knew it was me. She thought the storm had simply passed.

That night, as I left the office, I caught a glimpse of her through the glass walls of the lobby. She was sitting there, reading a book, her lips moving silently as she practiced the English she had once struggled with.

There was exhaustion on her face… but also fire.

And in that fire, I saw the girl I had admired since childhood. The girl who once hurt me, yes… but also the girl who taught me what resilience truly looked like.

I leaned against the wall, watching for a moment longer, before stepping away into the night.

“Someday,” I thought, “when she finally learns the truth — that I was the boy she mocked, the boy who vanished, and the man who returned — she will understand why I never stopped believing in her.”

Until that day came, I remained what I had always been: her silent guardian.
