The Stories of Us - Episode 16 – Whispers in the Shadows

Her victory in the boardroom was undeniable. The client signed the deal, the company celebrated, and for the first time, she stood in front of her peers not as a janitor-turned-employee, but as a professional who delivered results.

But success, I realized, comes with its own shadows.

It started with whispers.

“She got lucky.”

“The CEO helped her behind the scenes.”

“You really think a former janitor could pull that off?”

The rumors spread like wildfire through the hallways. I saw the way her shoulders stiffened whenever she overheard them. The way she forced a smile, pretending their words didn’t cut deep.

One afternoon, I found her alone in the pantry, gripping a coffee mug so tightly her knuckles turned white. Her eyes were downcast, her voice low.

“They’ll never see me for who I am,” she said, not knowing I had entered. “No matter what I do, I’ll always be… that girl who used to mop the floors.”

I stepped forward quietly. “And what’s wrong with that girl?”

She looked up, startled. I met her gaze, steady and unwavering.

“That girl,” I continued, “worked harder than anyone else here. That girl had every reason to give up but didn’t. And that girl… just secured a deal this company has been chasing for years. If they can’t see that, then the problem isn’t you — it’s them.”

For a moment, silence hung heavy between us. Her lips trembled, and I could see the tears she tried to hide.

“You always know what to say,” she whispered.

The truth was, I didn’t. I only spoke what my heart had carried for years — the admiration I never dared confess.

But as I stood there, watching her fight battles she didn’t deserve, a part of me burned with anger. I wanted to silence every rumor, confront every critic. Yet another part of me knew this was still her journey.

So I clenched my fists quietly, promising myself one thing:

The day will come when I will reveal everything. Who I am, what I feel, and why she was never invisible to me.

Until then, I remained in the shadows, her silent witness… and her fiercest protector.
