> We had a home overlooking the city.

Two cars, a growing business, and plans that stretched as far as our view from the balcony.

By every measure, we were doing well.


But inside our quiet condo, something was missing.

The laughter we used to share was replaced by the soft hum of the refrigerator and the ticking of the clock.


Janice had been visiting doctors, hoping for answers.

I took a few days off before my next voyage and joined her in one of those clinics.

I remember the doctor’s voice — calm but heavy —

“Sometimes, conception takes time,” he said. “But age might be a factor.”


That night, Janice cried silently beside me.

I wanted to tell her it didn’t matter, that she was enough — but she turned away, her shoulders trembling.


From then on, she smiled less often.

Our conversations became shorter, our calls colder when I went back to sea.


It’s strange how a dream can start so pure…

until the silence between two people becomes louder than the waves.
