> The first time I stepped on board a cargo vessel, I felt both pride and fear.
Pride, because I was finally living the dream I worked for.
Fear, because for the first time, I would be far away from everyone I loved — especially Janice.
Life at sea was not as romantic as I imagined.
Days turned into nights with no difference but the sound of waves and the hum of the engine.
I learned to measure time not by calendars, but by ports.
Every month, a letter would arrive — her handwriting neat, her words full of warmth.
“We’re okay here,” she’d write. “I miss you every Sunday.”
I’d read those lines over and over, even after the ink started to fade.
Her letters became my anchor — the only thing that reminded me I still had a home waiting.
But as the years went by, the letters came less often.
The sea got quieter, and somehow, so did she.
