Months at sea had become routine, and Janice’s replies grew shorter.
“I’m okay,” she’d say. “Just tired.”
I believed her, because that’s what trust does — it fills in the blanks we’re too afraid to read.
But one night during a brief call, I heard something different in her voice — not anger, not sadness… just distance.
Back home, she had become more active online.
My sister once mentioned, “Janice keeps posting late at night — parang may dinadaanan siya.”
I shrugged it off. I thought maybe it was loneliness — after all, distance does strange things to the heart.
Then one day, I noticed a familiar name commenting on her posts.
Jude Cañasa.
My brother in all but blood.
The man I trusted with everything.
I smiled when I saw his name, thinking nothing of it.
Because sometimes, betrayal doesn’t announce itself — it starts as a whisper, gently carried by the wind, waiting for the right storm to strike.
