The Stories of Us - Episode 6 – From Riches to Rags
I thought life was unfair to me when I was younger, but fate has a strange way of balancing things. Janice—the girl who once stood above everyone with her polished shoes and princess-like aura—slowly began to lose everything she once held dear.
It started with whispers I overheard from neighbors. Her father’s business had collapsed after a series of bad decisions. Their mansion, once filled with laughter and parties, turned quiet and empty. Cars were sold, jewelry pawned, and even the friends who once crowded around her family disappeared like smoke.
I saw her again one afternoon by pure chance. She was no longer the radiant girl who mocked me years ago. Her hair was unkempt, her clothes plain, her shoes cracked at the edges. She walked through the crowded street clutching a small bag, her steps heavy, her eyes searching for something—perhaps for dignity, perhaps for hope. My heart twisted in a way I could not explain. I wanted to tell myself this was justice, that this was life’s way of evening the score. But when I saw her stumble slightly, when I noticed her eyes glistening as she bit her lip to keep from crying, all I felt was sorrow.
“Ang hirap… paano na kami bukas?” I overheard her whisper to herself as she sat by the sidewalk, her knees pulled close. That one broken sentence pierced me deeper than all the insults she ever gave me as a child. She was no longer the princess. She was just a girl—lost, fragile, and human.
That night, I lay awake thinking of her. Should I help? Should I even care? But no matter how hard I tried to bury it, my heart still carried her name. I realized then that the boy who was once called trash had grown, but his feelings for the girl who once mocked him had never truly disappeared.
Her fall from riches to rags wasn’t a victory for me. It was a reminder—that even those who seem untouchable could break, and even those who once laughed at me could bleed.
