The Stories of Us - Episode 13: Closer To You

After that night of confession, things slowly began to change. For the first time in years, my heart felt lighter. I wasn’t just carrying the weight of my past anymore — I was holding onto a future.

One afternoon, I took her with me to a quiet ancestral house in the city. She didn’t know why at first, but I wanted her to meet someone very important.

When the heavy doors opened, she gasped. Inside stood my mother. Her hair had silver strands now, but her smile — the smile I once knew as a child — remained the same.

“Ma,” I said softly, guiding her closer. “This is her… the woman I told you about.”

My mother’s eyes filled with tears, not out of anger or judgment, but out of relief. For years, she had carried guilt for leaving her family, for raising me in hardship. That night, as we left the ancestral home together, I whispered to her:

“We’ve both lost so much. But maybe… just maybe… this time, we can build something that lasts.”

She smiled through her tears and held my hand tighter.

“Yes… let’s begin again.”

And under the evening sky, hand in hand, we walked forward — no longer bound by the pain of yesterday, but by the promise of tomorrow.
