Janice had once walked the halls of her school like a princess. Her hair always neatly tied, her shoes shining, and her laughter echoing with the confidence of someone who believed life would always bend to her will. But fate has a cruel way of teaching humility. When her father’s business collapsed and debts mounted like an avalanche, the once-spoiled girl suddenly found herself stripped of the luxury she had taken for granted. Her mother wept at night, clutching the remaining jewelry they hadn’t pawned, while her younger siblings whispered questions about why the electricity was cut again.

Days turned into weeks, and Janice’s name, once spoken with admiration, became the subject of gossip. Her classmates who once envied her bags and gadgets now sneered behind her back. Even the neighbors who had bowed to her father’s wealth avoided their family like a plague. Janice would stare at her reflection, no longer seeing the pampered princess, but a girl whose pride was cracking like fragile glass.

One afternoon, sitting outside their house, Janice clenched her fists as tears streamed down her face. “Bakit ganito? Lahat ng pinaghirapan ng pamilya ko, nawala lang sa isang iglap.” She remembered Arnel’s ragged face from the past—the boy she used to mock. A pang of guilt hit her chest, though she pushed the thought aside. Life had twisted, and now she was the one struggling to keep dignity while the world watched her fall.

Her father, once the pillar of their household, grew distant and silent, burdened by shame. Her mother tried to keep the family afloat with small earnings from selling snacks, but it was never enough. Janice’s siblings looked at her now, not as the spoiled sister, but as someone expected to step up. For the first time, she realized how heavy responsibility felt.

Janice promised herself she would survive. Even if she had to trade her silk dresses for secondhand clothes, even if she had to walk barefoot just to save money for food, she would stand again. The fall of the princess was only the beginning of something darker, but in her heart, a flicker of determination—strange and unfamiliar—began to burn.
